Chili Dog Pizza

An Tasty Combination Your Kids Will Love

Oct 19, 2009 Heidi Griffin

These are a few of your kid's favorite things! Put it all together and make a delicious, protein-rich meal that is a winner every time.

What kid doesn't love pizza? Or hot dogs? Or chili dogs?

This clever recipe combines all these favorites and makes a new one!

This recipe makes enough for two pizzas or one pizza and two or three bowls of chili and reheats well in either form.

The Ingredients

  • 2 pizza crusts (most come in 2 packs, so check the label)
  • 1 chili seasoning packet
  • 1/2 lb ground beef (thawed)
  • 1 can roasted, chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 can black beans
  • 1/4 onion, chopped
  • 4-5 hot dog weiners, sliced into circles
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar (or other) cheese
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup (or to taste)

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Brown 1/2 lb ground beef on stove and stir in chili seasoning packet.
  3. Add chopped onions, stir.
  4. Add 1/2 can black beans, stir.
  5. Next add can roasted, chopped tomatoes, stir.

Now your own tastes come in.

The portions of ketchup and garlic salt listed are just a guideline, so try adding a little at a time until you find the perfect flavor for your preference. And be sure to write it down for next time.

Now your chili is ready.

Making the Pizza

  1. Grease pizza pan/s or cookie sheet/s or cover with foil and place crusts on them.
  2. Spread a thick layer of chili on crusts.
  3. Add a thick layer of cheese.
  4. Add sliced weiners (and more diced onions if you wish)
  5. Sprinkle another layer of cheese, to hold the toppings in place.
  6. Sprinkle with garlic salt (if desired).
  7. Put pizzas in oven for 10-12 minutes or until the cheese is melted and crust is to your liking.

Depending on the amount of chili you use, you may need to cook a bit longer, so the crust is cripy enough to hold up under the strain.

Enjoy!

Preparation Alternatives and SubstitutionsThis recipe, like most pizza recipes, can be changed quite a bit and still turn out.

As mentioned above, many of the ingredients can be used "to taste" instead of in the specific quantities listed.

It also works well with soy cheese or a hard goat cheese, for those that are intolerant to cow dairy.

The black beans can be substituted with pinto beans or kidney beans.

The recipe can even be made vegetarian, by using Boca Crumbles in the the chili mixture and Tofu dogs, instead of hot dog weiners.

In a pinch canned chili can be used, but the extra trouble of chili from scratch is really worth it.
