A Unique Twist to an Old Family Favorite With a Secret Ingredient

Sep 27, 2009 Renee Holmes

Looking for a new way to make crock pot chili that always happens to be a family and party favorite? Try this easy to make robust chili recipe with a secret ingredient.

Chili recipes are abundant, usually passed on from generation to generation. Imagine a cool fall day, stepping foot into a cozy home with the smell of a warm meal wafting along. The stomach begins to growl and the thought of homemade chili with a handful of shredded cheese and oyster crackers begins to take over the mind. Then the mouth begins to water while the prospect of a fantastic chili dinner awaits.

Certain recipes get requested by family members and friends on a regular basis. With this unique twist on an old traditional dish, there is no need to make chili the way mom used to. Impress even the pickiest of taste buds with this bold, intense version of chili. Rather than adding sweetness to the flavor of the chili, the chocolate adds a more robust, hearty twist.

This recipe serves 8-10 people, and is great for family dinner or for parties. Leftover chili can be shared with neighbors or family, stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days, or frozen and re-warmed in a crock pot in the future.

Total preparation time takes less than 30 minutes, and cook time takes 7-8 hours.

Ingredients for Crockpot Chili With Chocolate

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 medium onions
  • 1 Tbs. pre-minced garlic, divided, or 8 fresh cloves, minced and divided
  • Two 28 oz. cans diced tomatoes (undrained)
  • 15 oz. can mild (or spicy) chili beans (undrained)
  • 2 Tbs. grated baking chocolate
  • 3 Tbs. chili powder
  • 1 Tbs. cumin
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 tsp. hot pepper sauce

Directions to Make Chili With Chocolate in a Crockpot

  1. Dice the onions into small pieces. Place the ground beef, chopped onions, and 1/2 tablespoon (or 4 minced fresh cloves) of garlic into a large skillet and brown until full cooked. Drain the fat off of the mixture fully.
  2. Place cooked ground beef, onion, and garlic mixture into the crock pot.
  3. Add in rest of ingredients, including the rest of the garlic (1/2 tablespoon or 4 minced fresh cloves) and mix slowly and completely.
  4. Cook on low for 7-8 hours. Avoid lifting the lid off of the crock pot to reduce optimal cooking time loss.

The Secret Ingredient

Revealing the secret ingredient in this unique chili recipe is optional, but tends to entice even the pickiest of family members to taste it, including children. Half the battle is convincing a young child to wrap their tiny lips around a spoonful of something new. Encouraging a bite with the promise of a hint of chocolate makes it hard for the young ones to resist.

After tasting, allow them bragging rights: “My mom puts chocolate in our chili!”
