Instead of the old standard recipe, try out this recipe instead. The use of ham with tangy vinegar and sweet brown sugar make a wonderful variation on a tasty meat dish
It is sometimes difficult to plan meals when the family wants the same old standard. By adding some variations, it is easy to help introduce some new ingredients while keeping some folks happy with familiar favourites. Try out this ham loaf recipe as a great alternative to meat loaf. It is a mixture of old-world flavors that will please picky eaters and will thrill family members of all ages.
The ground meats can be found in the meats section of the local grocery store or hand-ground by the butcher.
Ham Loaf Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs ground ham
- 1/2 pound ground veal
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 2 eggs
- 1 white onion - diced fine
- 1 cup cracker crumbs
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp dry mustard
- vinegar for paste
- cloves to taste
Directions:
- After washing hands well, mix together the ground ham, veal and pork.
- Add eggs and diced onion into the meat mixture
- Form into a loaf or two and roll in cracker crumbs
- Set on a drip tray
- Bake at 375 degrees for 2 hours for one loaf. A shorter baking time is needed for two loaves.
- Mix together the brown sugar and dry mustard in a separate bowl
- Add enough vinegar to make a paste that is easy to spread
- Add cloves to the spread if desired
- Spread the paste on the loaf
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for another 30 minutes
- The leftovers can be frozen for use at a later date. But - because of the amount of flavor in the hamloaf, they leftovers can also be used for almost any meal with almost any standard side dish.
For breakfast
- Slice thin and lightly fry with cooking spray. Serve with scrambled eggs or home-made muffins
- Crumble for use in a quiche. This is especially tasty with a swiss cheese quiche.
- Make breakfast sandwiches with english muffins and jelly or cheese. Great to go!
- Heat thoroughly and serve with fried breakfast potatoes
For Lunch
- Cook broccoli and cheese rice. Crumble ham loaf in at end. Enjoy with a salad.
- Add some barbecue sauce and make a "sloppy joe" sandwich. This is great with chips.
- Make a variation of the BLT sandwich - but instead of using bacon - use the ham loaf leftovers
For Dinner
- Cook some fettuccini, add some canned alfredo sauce and top with crumbled ham loaf
- Instead of sausages, serve with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut to make a German-style dinner
- Rinse the paste off the top to get rid of the vinegar taste. Layer in lasagna and make an Italian special
