This dinner recipe uses deer meat, yogurt and biscuit mix to make a creamy pot pie that is filling and delicious.

It can be a challenge to find ways of cooking deer that don’t all taste the same. This sophisticated pot pie uses plain yogurt and caraway seeds for a completely new spin on the old pot pie. While many venison recipes call for using the venison roast, this recipe can use the tenderloins, hind quarter or shoulder. Be sure to cut the venison into bite-size pieces for easy serving and eating. Note before shopping: It is necessary to buy two cups of plain yogurt to have enough to prepare this dish. This recipe makes 6 servings.

  • 10 ounces frozen peas and carrots, defrosted
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup plain yogurt

Ingredients for biscuit topping:

  • 2/3 cup plain yogurt

Directions:

  1. Brown venison cubes in a large saucepan with olive oil, chopped onion and minced garlic.

  3. Add chicken broth or water and chicken bouillon. Add caraway seeds, salt and pepper.
  4. Cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  6. Add sliced celery and peas and carrots to stew mixture.
  7. Simmer 15 minutes.
  8. Dissolve cornstarch in 1 tablespoon water. Blend into 1 cup plain yogurt. Pour yogurt mixture into stew and heat through.
  9. Pour stew mixture into a 2 quart casserole.
  10. Combine biscuit mix and remaining 2/3 cup of yogurt until well blended.
  11. Spoon biscuits on top of stew.
  12. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes until biscuits are browned.

This pot pie is one of those dishes that tastes even better the day after it is made. Store leftovers in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator.

Cook Deer Meat for Dinner

This venison recipe can be a very frugal way to cook deer meat. Since most venison is obtained by hunting rather than purchasing the deer meat, the caraway seeds are the most expensive part of this recipe. Purchased at a grocery store, caraway seeds can cost $4.50 and more. This is almost as much as all the other ingredients in this Sophisticated Pot Pie recipe combined. A container of caraway seeds can last a long time, however, and caraway seeds can be used in many other recipes.
